How are fragrances customarily classified?

Fragrances are usually divided into categories (groups) depending on the dominant note that characterizes them.

The notes themselves are divided into three classes based on their rate of evaporation (volatility):

  • Top notes — we perceive them instantly. They evaporate quickly, but these are precisely the notes that form our first impression of the fragrance.
